HERBAL MAGIC

Layered, bespoke storytelling-based experiences, informed by herbalism. Created by loric-herbalist, writer and narrative artist Amanda Edmiston, melding history with herbal medicine, gardens and wild places with art.

Botanica Fabula + Herbal Storytelling: A History

According to the official history, Botanica Fabula and herbal storytelling were something Amanda dreamt up back in 2010 after she had been studying herbal medicine at degree level,  following the advice and mentoring from her mum acclaimed storyteller and textile artist Jean Edmiston.

Botanica Fabula became a  place where stories of plants, told for thousands of years, found voice - stories that shared the way we work with them for medicine, food, and fabrication. It became a place where the stories connected to the land were augmented by experience, inviting the audience to experience the story with all their senses.

‘Herbal storytelling’ had not been given a name or central role in this way before.

This was not environmental storytelling or reminiscence, although those important allies have a part to play. This was not just traditional storytelling, or simply education, Amanda was seeking and creating a narrative art with interdisciplinary elements that shared plants, their use, social history, folklore, mythology and medicine with audiences in a truly unique way.

It was really something that could trace its way back to her childhood.

Herbal Storytelling began as a narrative art that is woven onto a fabric of the crafts, stories and understanding of plants that Amanda grew up immersed in, and has emerged as a with further research and found a way to share in a dynamic and engaging manner.
